TransJakarta, the bus system serving greater Jakarta, Indonesia, undertook a four-year expansion of its network in 2016, tripling its routes and doubling the number of buses in operation. Realizing the value of data from that expansion, they also improved fare collection infrastructure to better enforce how passengers use fare cards to tap in and tap out of buses, resulting in a 40% increase in the passenger tap out rate. Known as ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed), this neighborhood investment program assists working households whose earnings exceed the federal poverty level but are less than the area’s cost of living. In 2021, Pine Bluff was designated America’s “fasting shrinking city,” according to U.S. Pine Bluff was once the cultural and economic center of the Arkansas Delta before the departure of its manufacturing base in the 1980s. Over a century ago, the city had the fourth highest rate of Black wealth in urban America behind Charleston, South Carolina; Richmond, Virginia; and New York City.

This has led to a global trend toward centralization and standardization to improve service. To that end, a project team co-led by the U of A Community Design Center and Go Forward Pine Bluff has been awarded a $548,492 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s 2024 Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhood Grant Program. The Pine Bluff project is one of 132 planning or capital projects to be funded through $3.33 billion in grant awards in the 2024 program, and the only one from Arkansas.

Within 2021, we’ve replaced more than 40% of our fleet, ensuring our drivers a comfortable in the best equipment possible. Designs for the station furnishings required a balance between the demands of this high use/high abuse environment and the desire for a simple, minimal, clean, and modern design aesthetic. A singular form, material, and finish for the furnishings, along with common placement within each station, creates a coherent design narrative across the system. The floors are poured-in-place epoxy terrazzo that is charcoal-colored and combined with pieces of white marble and mother of pearl. The dark colored terrazzo is intended to help conceal stains and create a visual contrast with the lighter colored walls and ceilings, helping assist visually impaired travelers in managing their movement through the station. At the same time, the marble and mother of pearl give the terrazzo a visual texture that not only assists in masking stains but raises the light reflectance of the flooring and creates visual interest.

Design Transportation Safety Measurement System Data

The researchers believe this case study demonstrates the potential role of data-driven urban transport network design in planning thriving cities around the world. Grants seek to “reconnect” communities cut off in the past by transportation infrastructure, leaving such neighborhoods in many cases bereft of direct access to schools, jobs, medical offices and places of worship. All elements attach to the floor with a minimal number of contact points to clean around them more easily, create greater visibility for safety and security, and for fewer patch points when equipment is moved. A stainless-steel material with brushed finish was chosen for most of the amenities not only for durability, but also for a clean, modern aesthetic. The walls and ceilings use preformed metal panel systems, providing the opportunity to conceal conduits and other infrastructure elements. The suspended ceiling panels allow for light fixtures, speakers, and similar devices to be fully integrated and flush with the perforated ceiling panel.

The forum will include a presentation from MDTA and staff will be available to answer questions about the PDB project delivery method, procurement process and DBE opportunities and certification. While there will be an opportunity to ask questions during the Virtual Industry Forum, the MDTA is encouraging industry professionals to submit questions in advance online at KeyBridgeRebuild.com. All forum materials, including questions and answers, will be posted to the website following the virtual event.

From the time a prospective driver first applies to the day they decide to retire, we will always make safety our number one priority. This along with having late model equipment and the best fleet managers in the industry are just some of the ways we show our appreciation to our drivers. Every day our drivers go out there and do their job and do it safely, they have made the world a better place to live. A transportation design major positions you to make impactful contributions to a sustainable, mobile future. Since 1990, the Los Angeles Country Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) has built and operated the rail and subway system for the greater Los Angeles area. Currently, the system consists of 99 stations serving seven lines and over 100 miles of track. Our students understand the challenges facing all aspects of transportation and embrace these challenges as opportunities. Over 30 years later, Design Transportation has grown stronger and more efficient with over 100 tractors. Registration is now open at KeyBridgeRebuild.com for industry professionals interested in attending the Virtual Industry Forum.

In recent years, this methodology has gained prominence in the transportation sector, transforming the way we approach mobility and infrastructure. By focusing on understanding user needs, iterating prototypes, and fostering collaboration, design thinking has enabled transportation experts to develop creative solutions to improve efficiency, safety, and user experience. The Best Colleges for Design majors ranking is based on key statistics and student reviews using data from the U.S.

This year's rankings have introduced an Economic Mobility Index, which measures the economic status change for low-income students. ACT/SAT scores have been removed from rankings to reflect a general de-emphasis on test scores in the college admissions process. At EXP, we provide transportation planning solutions to create stronger, more resilient communities. We merge engineering and planning to create great communities and improve the quality of life at street level. Google ride is a mobility concept for 2025 that aims to provide a thoughtful, accessible, AI-driven public transportation system which utilizes riders’ data to provide more personalized experience.

There are many reasons that deter people from using public transportation — from safety, to cleanliness, to the difficulty of navigating stations. Through simple, creative, and thoughtful design solutions, these issues can be overcome to provide a quality rider experience. Using design to help find solutions to increasing ridership and pride in our public transportation networks is imperative in getting our future cities right — and is all the more important as the world’s population continues to migrate to our urban centers.
